Outdoor sculpture

Tsunagi Art Museum is a part of the Greenery and Sculpture Community Building Project that began in 1984, and as such has installed 16 sculptures, including work by SATO Churyo, throughout the town. Pieces by NISHI Tatzu, YANAGI Yukinori, ASAI Yusuke, and SHIBAKAWA Toshiyuki are available for viewing outside the museum.

  • Sofu

    Just like the sea winds bring bounty to the shore, Sofu was erected with the hope of bringing winds of progress to Tsunagi. Akebono Bridge, where the statue is located, was awarded with the 1st Tezukuri Furusato Award by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

  • Kumpu

    The figure's outstretched arms, attempting an all-encompassing embrace, are meant to express the tolerance and acceptance of all creation. Facing away from the setting sun, Like the Greek god Apollo, Kunpu looks out over Tsunagi from his perch on Akebono Bridge, always keeping a quiet eye over the town.

  • Kazenko

    Symbolized by how dandelion seeds fly away in the breeze, this piece expresses the youthful energy of the local children ready to set out into the world. The three pieces installed on bridges—Sofu, Kunpu, and Kazenko—are wind-themed and represent the mother, father, and children that make up a family.

  • Wakai onna

    This was the first sculpture purchased by Tsunagi to commemorate the building of the new Town Hall. It is located in the entrance area of Tsunagi Town Hall.

    This piece expresses the beauty in the human. The piece was formerly installed at Hachioji Station in Tokyo and Takada Park in Joetsu. The harmony between nature and the graceful outstretched figure present a scene that contrasts interestingly with an urban environment.

  • Hagurekko

    Hagurekko is a sculpture of a lonely child who has become lost. Viewing the piece at different times of year as seasons change reveals new faces of the work. Three pieces by IWANO Yuzo — Wakai Onna, Nau, and Hagurekko—are on display at Tsunagi Town Hall.

    This sculpture of a boy holding a festival mask to his face and dancing is full of life and energy. Festival is located within the tunnel that connects the front desk of the Shikisai Tsunagi Onsen to the bathing hall.

  • Toki no Tsubasa

    The sculpture was created around the idea of helping Tsunagi jump forward, with the large wings assisting in carrying Tsunagi to a bright future.

    This statue of a woman dressed in a blouse, hands folded in front of her as if in prayer, illustrates the warmth, beauty, and kindness of the female form.

  • Torso

    This piece was created in pursuit of recreating the aesthetic beauty of the human torso, as is often found in ancient Greek sculpture. The sculpture, located in front of Tsunagi Art Museum, acts to provide visitors a warm welcome to the museum. The model for this piece is Chizuko Sasado, who was the sculptor of Shirt Blouse found in Meganebashi Park.

  • Chiyo

    This sculpture is of Chiyo, a young woman who lived in Tsunagi in the 1800s. The story goes that the local lord was moved by Chiyo's reverence for her elders and gifted her 10 bushels rice each year.
