Outdoor Installations

Visitors to Tsunagi can enjoy a number of different art installations created during our Art Projects.

  • Nyukon House

    Inspired by the writings of Michiko Ishimure that describe the bounty of the Shiranui Sea, this piece was built by renovating the swimming pool of an abandoned school.

  • Ishidama Garden

    This installation consists of cracked stones, both large and small, from which faint sounds emanate. The gingko grove echoes with the local culture and history that make up Tsunagi, from the writings of Michiko Ishimure to the tragedy of Minamata Disease.

  • Tatzu Butzu

    This installation features 33 golden Buddhas carved into live trees. The gaze of the Buddhas, filled with a desire for a promising future based on the memories of the past, welcome visitors to this mystical area. In Buddhisim, "33" is considered a holy number.

    Every autumn (Subject to change due to weather)

    When the tradition of Benten Festival died out, Yasuaki Igarashi worked together with the locals to recreate the festival in a work of art. The exhibition period depends on the tides, meaning that the exhibition schedule changes each year.

  • Tsunagi no Nekko

    This installation is the culmination of a variety of ideas obtained by the artist Yusuke Asai and project participants after visiting local natural and manmade locations. The art decorates five areas throughout town, spanning a total length of 700 meters.

  • Prometheus no Ki: Epilogue

    This tree was transplanted here at the completion of its original exhibition. The trunk and branches are decorated with petroleum-related products and the technologies that helped create modern society. It now offers a look back at the future of society anticipated back in 2000.
